FAQ

WALNUT OIL
Q: If I need more walnut oil from a  grocery store, which brands on the market are best?
A: Any health food store brand that does not contain vitamin C or any preservatives and is "refined".
Q: Will the walnut oil be like a thinner?
A: Yes, some people don't use solvent at all but use walnut oil or linseed oil to thin their paint and also use oil or Murphy's Oil Soap (and then soap and water) to clean their brushes. The reason people use solvent is because you can make "watery" paint for drips or some like really thin paint for underpaintings. It also cleans brushes easier and faster than oil. But just using oil for everything is also an option.
Q: Why does the oil paint take so long to dry?
Walnut oil dries slow and can dry to the touch between 4-8 days depending on the humidity of your area, the type of pigment used and how thickly it was applied. You can speed the drying time greatly by adding M.Graham's Walnut Alkyd Medium however I cannot atest to if that product is non-toxic or not.
Q: What's the difference between walnut and linseed oil?
A: You can use linseed oil interchangeably. We use walnut oil because it's higher quality and is less yellowing over time. But linseed oil dries faster which some people prefer.
Q: Can I use food-grade walnut oil with the oil paint pigments, rather than "refined"?
A: Yes, you can use any food grade walnut oil. But it's very important that it doesn't have anything added like Vit. C or an anti-oxidant to prevent rancidity. This will mess up your painting. And it's best if it's refined.

Q: I was wondering if there is a product that will help prevent ageing and yellowing of an artwork?
A: We sell walnut oil because it is less yellowing than linseed oil. The natural pigments themselves are completely non-yellowing and supremely archival - they never age or fade and are resistant to humidity as well. That is the beauty and benefit of using earth pigments mixed with walnut oil because there are no fillers, preservatives or additives that are found in tubed oil paints that have an effect on the longevity and luminosity of the paint.
Q: I received a complaint from a chemically sensitive person who said when she opens the bottle she gets an instant respiratory irritation. Were any chemicals used in the refining process?
A: It is pure, expeller pressed walnut oil, so no other chemical or oils are introduced in manufacturing or bottling (when it is refined it is naturally "bleached" with clay which is just a natural filtering for color and clarity and there should be no allergen potential because its refined. No hexane or solvents are used at all.
